Welcome to the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology (ARST) website. Use the buttons to the left to read the ARST constitution, ARST news, calls for papers and other announcements concerning the Annual Conference and ARST-sponsored panels at the National Communication Association convention, or check out all sorts of resources for teaching rhetoric of/and science and/or technology.
ARST was founded in 1992 with the hope of providing a forum for researchers and teachers in the area of the rhetoric of science and technology. Since then, ARST has hosted day-long conferences in conjunction with the annual meetings of National Communication Association (NCA). In addition, ARST acts as an interest group of NCA to host panels and papers within the conference itself. Originally called the American Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology, in November 2006 members voted unanimously to rename the organization to the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology in order to better reflect the international nature of its membership and intellectual concerns.
The current president and organizer for NCA panels and papers is McClain Watson (University of Texas at Dallas). Greg Wilson (Los Alamos National Laboratory) is vice-president and organizer for the NCA preconference seminar. Our 2nd Vice President is Roy Schwartzman (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and our Secretary-Treasurer is Bill White (Penn State - Altoona). All welcome suggestions for conference planning and queries about the preconference and the NCA panels and papers. Immediate past presidents include John Angus Campbell (University of Memphis) and Bill White (Penn State - Altoona).
Membership in ARST is open to researchers, teachers and those with an interest in rhetoric of science and technology. Annual membership dues of ($10.00 for faculty/ $5.00 for students) help to support our annual conference. The treasurer of ARST collects membership fees and is collating a list of members. To join, simply print and complete the membership form (MS Word | PDF), then mail it to the ARST treasurer at the address below:
